Today the curious explorers visted the Geological Museum and asked professor Witkowski from the University of Szczecin some of geological questions regarding the area of Poland.
Dear Professor, are there any active volcanoes in Poland?
There aren't any active volcanoes now, but we do have a Yellow Trail of extinct volcanoes in the Kaczawskie Mountains like Ostrzyca Proboszczowicka also called Silesian Fujiama. The hill has a conical shape and is an extinct and eroded volcano that was active in the Neogene period, the highest peak is 501 m above sea-level.
Werewolf, Wolf and Bear - yes we are still talking about the volcanoes and their remainings. Let me take you to the land of beautiful nature preservance.
Near Zlotoryja we have a Wolf Mountain known as Werewolf which is a piece of a volcano with its basaltic peak 367 m above the sea-level. Use your imagination and look closer - perhaps you can see a hidden werewolf in the volcanic silhouette. At the bottom you can also explore the Wolf's Cave which is 7 metres long as long as the smaller 2m deep Bear Cave. Do you think a bear used it as its home?
Small Myślibórz Organs is not a musical instrument. It is a basalt volcanic plug in Mysliborz Gorg. It is the remnant of a volcanic chimney that was formed in this place about 15-18 million years ago. By this time, the cone of the volcano had eroded and the so-called plug remained. The remaining excavations are responsible for the activities of people who used the basalt found in construction. A volcanic chimney was unveiled in the now-closed quarry, characterized by fascinating columns of frozen lava.
Wdżar (Wżar) mountain from where you can see the beautiful view of Pieniny - the youngest volcanic rocks in Poland. This place is quite magical, bring your compass there and check what happens. You can experience a magnetic anomaly where the compass needle tilts South instead of North. It also happens that the compass needle "goes crazy" spinning around its axis.
Thank You Professor, now we can explore the post-volcanic trails knowing where to go, we definetely need to take the cameras, compass and the notebook to write down all the stories from our adventures. See you next time.
